What does it mean to “bury your head in the sand?” It means actively avoiding the truth about life, or your circumstances in life. It is a direct form of denial. When we bury our heads in the sand (i.e., avoid the truth) we cannot get the most of our lives and we operate in darkness. When we operate in darkness we are much more likely to experience serious tragedy.
Have you ever encountered somebody who was not willing to recognize an obvious truth? Have you ever avoided knowing something or hearing something that was scary or intimidating for you? Some people might avoid admitting or recognizing that a family member has a substance-abuse problem; others might avoid knowing or recognizing that there’s abuse going on in the family; Still others might avoid the knowledge or reality that they are doing poorly in a college course with the possibility of failing the course, they might then avoid talking to the teacher or instructor. These are just a few examples of an unwillingness to recognize the truth for what it is.
Truth is very important. It is fundamental to improvement, and long-term successes. Only when you know what the problem truly is can you have any real hope of solving it. That is why it is critical to live in and be open to the truth.
It’s important that we understand the truth about ourselves and about the world. If we don’t understand these truths, we operate in ways that cause of us and others to experience unnecessary pain.
Perhaps the most important truth of all is the truth about ourselves. We need to know who we are, what are inherent value is, and how we stand in relationship to the world.

Each and everyone of us was born as individuals of truth. We were open to the truth in our environment. We believed what we were taught. We felt what we felt, we cried when we hurt, and we smiled when we were happy. We just wanted to be happy and loved. Unfortunately, many of us were either treated poorly as children, were taught improperly as children, were directly lied to as children. The falsehoods we internalized as a result have caused us to see the world and ourselves incorrectly.
Perhaps the most fundamental definition of integrity is a willingness to see things for what they are, and to deal honestly with people in difficult situations. It means being honest about our feelings, to be honest in what we say, and to be genuine in our actions (i.e., not acting a certain way to give a certain impression). We can just be ourselves, and allow others to be themselves.
